Spalling can cause significant damage
The steel reinforcing bars inside poured concrete should be kept several inches away from the face of the concrete. When subject to moisture, these bars will rust and expand, causing the face of the concrete to spall or break off. This defect is typically of a minor nature. In some installations the rusting can be substantial, necessitating major concrete repair or foundation replacement.
